A fusion of tree portraiture and poetry

This fusion of tree portraiture and poetry highlights the Passing-Through moments in our lives: those soul-stirring instances that awaken us to nature’s sometimes hidden and often startling beauty. It features the Woodland Trust’s lush and exquisite Shaw Gill ravine in Wensleydale alongside the abandoned, arid and stark Can Coll wood in Catalunya.

An edition of about 65 copies is planned for publication towards the close of 2026. The expected extent is 48 pages of text and image. The page format will be 295mm high by 220mm wide. The texts will be set by hand in Jan Tschichold’s Sabon-Antiqua from types cast from D.Stempel AG matrices in 12, 14 and 16 point Didot. The display work is to be printed in Hermann Zapf’s Optima Semi-Bold. Bound in with the text pages will be four digital mezzotints of Valera’s photographs printed in subtle colour hues on a contrasting paper. In addition, twelve black-and-white prints of Valera’s photographs printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper are planned as tip-ins following on from the text pages which will be printed on Hahnemühle Bugra-Bütten white cotton rag paper.

The regular copies will be bound by hand at Corvus Works into a quarter cloth case with printed paper sides. The price is £185.00 plus post and packing. A 50% deposit on ordering/reserving with balance due in the autumn of 2026.

If there is sufficient interest a few special copies (10–12) will be bound in quarter leather with specially made paste paper sides and be housed in a matching slipcase. It is anticipated Roger Grech will be binding these copies. A set of four photogravure prints are  planned to accompany the photographs. Price for special copies will be around £420.00 plus post and packing.
