Le Cimetière Marin / The Graveyard by the Sea

Paul Valéry’s classic poem recounting the cemetery in his hometown of Sète by the Mediterranean sea. originally published in French language in 1920. The text for this edition is from the Officina Bodoni edition of 1946 with the English language translation of C. Day Lewis. The languages are printed in parallel using Stempel Sabon types printed in black and blue. Royal Scottish Academy artist, Alfons Bytautas has created a special edition of four screen prints for this edition. Each printed in black, plus one colour: blue, orange and grey; these are printed as double spreads to view and pasted onto a guarded leaf. The extended colophon giving an account of the printing of this edition is signed and numbered by the artist. Approx. 85 copies are offered for sale.

Hand-set in Stempel foundry Sabon 20p Didot Antiqua printed black for the French, with 20p Didot Kursiv in blue for the English. Texts printed on Arches Velin Blanc 165 gsm, Screen prints on Fabriano Fabriano Disegno 5 hot pressed 250gsm, title pages on blue Fabriano Tiziano 165gsm. Titles printed in Antique Olive Bold Condensed poster types. Cover label in Antique Olive Bold Condensed with Hermann Zapf’s brush rules. Hand-sewn and cased in the workshop. Quarter bound with blue buckram spine with marble paper sides.
