Sabon: Tschichold & Hochuli

A book in three parts: (1) Jan Tschichold’s 1967 essay for the Stempel typefoundry: ‘Leben und Bedeutung: des Schriftschneiders Jakob Sabon’ translated from the German; (2) the first English translation of Hochuli’s review of ‘Sabon: Neue Schrift’, review of the Sabon typeface from Issue 2, Typografische Monatsblätter 1969; (3) 16 pages showing the Stempel foundry cast Sabon at various sizes in sample settings, with texts by Tschichold, Dreyfus, McLean, Porchez etc. Perhaps the first time the complete range of sizes from 12 up to 48 point Didot foundry types have appeared in a single edition other than Stempel sales literature. 9, 10and 12 point Didot sizes are also used in the book.

Several black-and-white photographs of the matrices and record sheets held in Rainer Gerstenberg’s collection are reproduced along with images of actual type and specimens. These are digitally printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag and tipped in. Two additional tipped on specimen sheets printed on Somerset Book.

Printed on Zerkall and Hahnemühle grey and green. 16 pages + 8 pages + 4 pages. 390mm x 275mm. Bound with green/grey cloth spine with marble paper sides over boards. Label on spine.
